Binghamite cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Very VERY rare, particulary in this calibre. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite is sometimes called 'American pietersite, though it typically exhibits a chatoyance all its own. Sadly, it's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This cab features silky streaks and patches of red chatoyance, alternating most attractively with light and dark. The blackish areas are actually darkly shiny metallic hematite that don't show up well in the photos, but you get the idea. An amazing example, even nicer in hand! It has a high rounded dome of 6mm, a sleek designer shape, and an excellent polish both front and back.
Size: 59x17.5mm
Weight: approximately 45 carats
