Petrified wood cab ~
Offered here is a boldly marked cabochon of opalized petrified wood, from Nevada. This ancient fossil material is always a joy to work, with none of the typical fractures pet wood so often has. I am told this material is more accurately called an agate replacement, though a close look reveals that it still retains strong hints of ringed pattern of the living tree it once was. The backlit photo reveals that the dark brown areas are a gemmy gel-like agate, showing a carmel colored translucence. This stone will look grand in most any setting, either gold or silver, no matter how simple or fancy. The cab has a nicely rounded dome, and a fine glassy polish both front and back.
