Binghamite cab ~
Offered here is a large designer cabochon of rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite typically exhibits a chatoyance all its own. Sadly, it's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This cab features silky streaks and patches of golden yellow with red, and the blackish areas are actually darkly shiny metallic hematite that don't show up well in photos. I did manage to catch a hint of the metallics in the last pic. A splendid example! It has a well rounded dome of 5+mm, a sleek symmetrical 'catseye' shape, and an excellent polish both front and back.
