hypersthene cab ~
Offered here is a large designer cabochon of hypersthene, from Quebec, Canada. This iron pyroxene mineral has bands of flash that are mighty difficult to capture in photos, but hopefully these pics will give you the idea. I'm told that the crystal twinning in this material is responsible for its showy refractions, the astonishing look of which reminds me of an impossible cross between moonstone and tigereye. The bands shift and change with movement of the stone, in a cool pearly gray color with subtle undertones of purplish gold. A close look reveals an interesting circular moire pattern, much like fingerprints. Wild, huh? This example has a generously high rounded dome of 8mm, a crisp triangular shape, and a gleaming polish both front and back.
