Snake eyes agate cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of 'snake eyes agate', strange new stuff from Mexico. I don't rightly know if there's such a thing as oolitic agate, but I do believe the tightly packed little eyes (or eggs?) in this material are properly called oolites. The clear gel-like background in which they float is definitely agate, but I've never seen anything quite like this, have you? Several of the eyes have a small void in their centers, as you can see in the photos, but they serve as added character, by my lights. The red line down one side is a long-healed fracture, filled with rusty color. Strange stuff, indeed, and kinda cool! The cab has a rounded dome of 5mm, and despite a wee bit of subtle waviness, it took a nice gleaming polish both front and back.
Size: 53x25mm
Weight: approximately 45 carats
