Crown of Silver Psilomelane cab ~
Here is a truly remarkable cabochon of Crown Of Silver psilomelane, from Chihuahua, Mexico. This classic material is sometimes referred to as 'black malachite', though there's no real relationship. This beauty is loaded with both wide and fine bandings, curving around to enclose a single odd plume-like figure, in sub-metallic black and shiny silver. One end is a deep reddish color, adding much to the stone's visual impact and rarity. The red area is opaque, and looks to be a jasper/agate mixture. The stone is very highly reflective, making photography quite challenging, but the pics are an excellent representation. Please note the teensy void, visible in the last pic toward the bottom center; it will be concealed by most any setting and I really doubt you'll consider its presence distracting. This bullet shaped cab has a nicely rounded dome of 5mm, and a slick glassy polish. The backside has a shallow 2 to 3mm hairline and is sanded smooth and flat.
