Binghamite cab ~
Here is a cabochon of rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite is sometimes called 'American pietersite, though it typically exhibits a velvety chatoyance all its own. Sadly, it's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This cab features silky streaks and patches of rosy reddish-orange, highlighted with golden yellow, quite splendidly chatoyant, in a background of grayish white quartz. The small dark areas are actually darkly shiny metallic hematite that don't reveal themselves in the photos. It's an amazing example, one of the nicest I've ever offered. It has a low rounded dome of about 4.5mm, a sleek designer shape, and an excellent polish both front and back.
Size: 50x26mm
Weight: approximately 62 carats
