Blue opal cab ~
Here is a large cabochon of blue opal, a fairly recent find from Oregon's Succor Creek formation, at the edge of the Owyhee breaks. And lemme tell ya folks, it's mighty appealing stuff! Even though there's no fire, I really hesitate to call it 'common opal', because it's certainly anything BUT common. It has a super-saturated blue hue that's to-die-for gemmy, with some very subtle lighter streaks, clouds and dots. Despite a couple of the all too typical fracture veils and odd lines, the cab is quite sound and worthy. I was surprised to see that this strongly colored stone is very translucent, even when indirectly backlit; in some areas, you can almost read through it! It should be equally beautiful in gold or silver jewelry, no doubt, or it would make a fine addition to any collection. The stone has a low rounded dome of 5mm, a fun designer shape, and a totally glassy polish both front and back.
