Binghamite cab ~
Offered here is a collectible cabochon of RARE binghamite, from Minnesota's Cuyuna Range. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, it's been called the American pietersite, but binghamite exhibits a chatoyance all its own. Sadly, even the old mine tailings have been picked clean, so it's very scarce nowadays. The silky gleam of this one is in patches, patterned craqueleur style, in a beautiful golden yellow streaked with red. The blackish lines are actually darkly shiny metallic hematite that don't show up well in photos. I did manage to catch just a hint of the metallics in the second and third pics. Believe me when I tell you this is a treasure anyone would be proud to own! The stone has a high and well rounded dome of nearly 6.5mm, and an excellent polish both front and back.
Size: 52x28mm
Weight: approximately 56 carats
