Nipomo marcasite cab ~
Here is a splendid designer cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. The area where this great old material was once collected is no longer accessible, so it has become very scarce these days, particularly in this well above-average calibre. This example is loaded with shiny metallic 'islands' of marcasite, which are actually plumes, in a background of translucent bluish and yellow agate. Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph because the polished surface is very reflective, a lot like a mirror; I think the stone in hand is far more attractive, showing a good deal more detail than these photos illustrate. This substantial cab has a well rounded dome of 5mm, and a fine glassy polish both front and back.
