Howardite cab ~
Offered here is an intriguing cabochon of howardite (an unsual and VERY rare form of opalized-silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. According to the miner, this material was completely mined out long ago, and what little there is to be had comes at a very high premium these days. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has delightful coloration and figure, reminding me of crazy venetian blinds or zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pics are actually holes filled with highly translucent agate, giving the stone a surprising quality of depth. This cab has a well rounded dome, and a fine glassy polish both front and back.
