Nipomo marcasite cab ~
offered here is a cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. The area where this great old material was once collected is no longer accessible, so it has become quite hard to come by these days, particularly in this above-average calibre. This fine example has many shiny metallic 'islands' of marcasite, in a background of the classic translucent yellow agate, framing crystalline cores. The 'band' of pale blue agate is actually a pair of pools, separating a strip of marcasite into two. At certain angles, marcasite plumes glitter out from inside the stone, adding to the charm. Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph, because the polished surface is very reflective; I think the stone in hand is nicer and shows a great deal more detail than these photos illustrate. This cab has a low but well rounded dome of 5mm, a gracefully curved designer shape, and a smooth glassy polish both front and back.
