Nipomo marcasite cab ~
Here is a cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. The area where this great old material was once collected is no longer accessible, so it has become quite hard to come by these days, particularly in this above-average calibre. This example is jam packed with shiny metallic 'islands' of marcasite, in a background of translucent bluish agate. Oodles of gleam wink out from inside the stone, giving it a glittery look. Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph, because the polished surface is very reflective; I think the stone in hand is nicer and shows a good deal more detail than these photos illustrate. This substantial cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a gracefully curved designer shape, and a smooth glassy polish both front and back.
