Crab agate cab ~
Here is a delightfully distinguished cabochon of crab agate, called crab 'fire' agate by some. Can't say that I endorse that name, because it has no relation to genuine fire agate. Other than its gorgeous translucent tangerine orange and pink color, and the neat crackly spiderwebbing, I honestly can't tell you much about this new material. My cousin gave it to me to try. It seems quite possible that the neat webbed effect may have been created by some process involving heat and quenching, but if so, no one's talking. That said, I have to tell you I really like this fascinating stuff, and think this stone is a real keeper. The cab has a nicely rounded dome of 4+mm, a gracefully curved designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
