Nipomo marcasite cab ~
Here is a cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location
in Central California. The area where this great old material was once collected is no longer
accessible, so it has become very scarce these days, particularly in this well above-average calibre.
This example is loaded with shiny metallic 'islands' of marcasite, which are actually plumes, in a
background of translucent bluish white agate. Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging
material to photograph because the polished surface is very reflective, a lot like a mirror. I do need to point out that there are a few minor hairlines in this stone, though they're quite easily overlooked.
This cab has a well rounded dome of 5mm, and a fine glassy polish both front and back.
Size: 38x24mm
Weight: approximately 49 carats
